WordPress VPS hosting

WordPress runs well on a GhostRDP Linux VPS Basic plan with 2 vCPU and 6 GB RAM in Germany or the Netherlands, from €5.99/mo.

This guide runs WordPress from its official Docker image with a MySQL database, and puts Caddy in front for free HTTPS. Prefer a control panel? Our CloudPanel guide installs WordPress from a web interface instead.

  • The full WordPress

Every theme and plugin, with full control of the server.

  • Free HTTPS

Caddy gets and renews the certificate for your domain.

  • Tidy with Docker

WordPress and MySQL in containers, easy to move and back up.

How to install WordPress

Written for Ubuntu 24.04 from the official instructions. Run the commands as root and replace YOUR_SERVER_IP with your server's address.

  1. 1

Connect to your server over SSH

Use the IP address and root password from your welcome email (the server page has a Copy SSH command button). Windows 10 and 11, macOS and Linux all include an SSH client in the terminal.

    Shell
    ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
  2. 2

    Update the system

Install the latest security updates before you add anything else.

    Shell
apt update && apt -y upgrade
  3. 3

    Install Docker

Docker's official convenience script adds Docker's own package repository and installs Docker Engine with the Compose plugin.

    Shell
    curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh
    sh get-docker.sh
    docker --version
  4. 4

    Write the Compose file

Based on the official WordPress image's example. Change both passwords (they must match); WordPress listens on the server itself only.

    Shell
    mkdir -p /opt/wordpress && cd /opt/wordpress
    cat > compose.yaml <<'EOF'
    services:
      wordpress:
        image: wordpress
        restart: always
        ports:
          - "127.0.0.1:8080:80"
        environment:
          WORDPRESS_DB_HOST: db
          WORDPRESS_DB_USER: wpuser
          WORDPRESS_DB_PASSWORD: change-this-password
          WORDPRESS_DB_NAME: wordpress
        volumes:
          - wordpress:/var/www/html
      db:
        image: mysql:8.0
        restart: always
        environment:
          MYSQL_DATABASE: wordpress
          MYSQL_USER: wpuser
          MYSQL_PASSWORD: change-this-password
          MYSQL_RANDOM_ROOT_PASSWORD: '1'
        volumes:
          - db:/var/lib/mysql
    volumes:
      wordpress:
      db:
    EOF
    docker compose up -d
  5. 5

    Add HTTPS with Caddy

Replace example.com with your domain. Caddy gets a free certificate automatically; ports 80 and 443 must be reachable.

    Shell
    apt install -y caddy
    cat > /etc/caddy/Caddyfile <<'EOF'
    example.com {
        reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:8080
    }
    EOF
    systemctl reload caddy
  6. 6

    Finish the WordPress installer

Open https://example.com, choose your language and create the admin account.

After installing

  • Email
Outgoing mail ports (25, 465, 587) are blocked by default on our servers. Unlock them with the mail add-on, or use an SMTP plugin with an email API provider.
  • Updates
Update WordPress, themes and plugins from the dashboard. For the containers: docker compose pull && docker compose up -d.
  • Backups
Server backups are not included. Back up both Docker volumes (wordpress and db), or use a backup plugin with remote storage.
