Docker VPS hosting
Docker runs well on a GhostRDP Linux VPS Basic plan with 2 vCPU and 6 GB RAM in Germany or the Netherlands, from €5.99/mo.
Our Linux servers are full KVM virtual machines, so Docker runs as on any dedicated machine, with root access and no restrictions on containers. This guide installs Docker Engine with Compose from Docker's own repository.
Engine and Compose
Docker's own packages, from Docker's repository.
Full KVM server
Root access and no limits on what containers can do.
Many services
Run several apps side by side with Compose.
Plans for Docker
Basic runs a handful of small containers. Pick Standard or Pro for databases, many services or build jobs.

How to install Docker
Written for Ubuntu 24.04 from the official instructions. Run the commands as root and replace YOUR_SERVER_IP with your server's address.
- 1
Connect to your server over SSH
Use the IP address and root password from your welcome email (the server page has a Copy SSH command button). Windows 10 and 11, macOS and Linux all include an SSH client in the terminal.
Shell ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP - 2
Update the system
Install the latest security updates before you add anything else.
Shell apt update && apt -y upgrade - 3
Install Docker
Docker's official convenience script adds Docker's own package repository and installs Docker Engine with the Compose plugin.
Shell curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh sh get-docker.sh docker --version - 4
Check that it works
Runs Docker's test image and shows the Compose version.
Shell docker run --rm hello-world docker compose version - 5
Run your first Compose app
A small example: an nginx web server on port 80.
Shell mkdir -p /opt/web && cd /opt/web cat > compose.yaml <<'EOF' services: web: image: nginx:stable ports: - "80:80" restart: unless-stopped EOF docker compose up -d curl -I http://localhost
After installing
- Firewall notePorts published by Docker (-p or ports:) are open to the internet even with ufw on. Publish to 127.0.0.1 for services that should stay private.
- Updatesdocker compose pull && docker compose up -d updates the images of a Compose app.
- BackupsServer backups are not included. Back up your volumes and compose files yourself.
Docker questions
Which plan do I need for Docker?
Basic for a few small containers. Standard or Pro for databases, many services or CI builds.
Does Docker work on your VPS?
Yes. The servers are KVM virtual machines with full root access, so Docker Engine installs normally.
Can I run Docker on Windows RDP?
Use a Linux VPS for Docker. Docker Engine runs natively on Linux, and that is the setup this guide covers.
Is Docker pre-installed?
No. You get a clean OS and install Docker with the steps on this page in a couple of minutes.
