MetaTrader 5 VPS hosting

MetaTrader 5 runs well on a GhostRDP Windows RDP Basic plan with 2 vCPU and 6 GB RAM in Germany or the Netherlands, from €7.99/mo.

A Windows server keeps your MT5 terminal and Expert Advisors online when your own PC is off. This guide covers the install, logging in to your broker and keeping MT5 running.

  • Runs 24/5

Your EAs keep trading while your own PC is off.

  • Several terminals

Install MT5 more than once, one terminal per account or broker.

  • EU locations

Germany or the Netherlands, near many European broker servers.

Plans for MetaTrader 5

One MT5 terminal with a few EAs needs little. The Basic plan leaves room for two or three terminals. Pick Standard or Pro if you run many terminals, many charts or heavy strategy tests.

How to install MetaTrader 5

Written for Windows Server 2022 from the official instructions. Your server comes with full Administrator access, so you install the software yourself.

  1. 1

Connect to your server with Remote Desktop

Open your server in the client area and download the .rdp file, or open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) on your PC and enter the server's IP address. Sign in as Administrator with the password from your welcome email. On a Mac, use Windows App (Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the App Store.

  2. 2

    Download MetaTrader 5

On the server, open Microsoft Edge and download the installer from metatrader5.com, or use your broker's own MT5 installer if it offers one (it comes with the broker's servers already listed). You can also download the official installer from PowerShell.

    PowerShell
    Invoke-WebRequest "https://download.terminal.free/cdn/web/metaquotes.ltd/mt5/mt5setup.exe" -OutFile "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads\mt5setup.exe"
    Start-Process "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads\mt5setup.exe"
  3. 3

Install and sign in to your broker

Run the installer and click Next. When MT5 opens, choose File > Login to Trade Account, search for your broker's server name and enter your account number and password.

  4. 4

    Add your Expert Advisor

Choose File > Open Data Folder, copy your EA (.ex5 or .mq5) into MQL5\Experts, then right-click Expert Advisors in the Navigator and choose Refresh. Drag the EA onto a chart and turn on Algo Trading in the toolbar.

  5. 5

    Keep MT5 open

Close the Remote Desktop window with the X instead of signing out, so the terminal keeps trading. See below for starting MT5 again after a server restart.

After installing

  • Leave it running
Close the Remote Desktop window with the X instead of signing out. Your session, and everything open in it, keeps running on the server.
  • Start again after a reboot
Programs in a Windows session only start when someone signs in. After Windows updates restart the server, connect once over RDP, or set up automatic sign-in with Microsoft's Sysinternals Autologon tool and put a shortcut to the app in the Startup folder (Win+R, shell:startup).
  • Check the connection
The bottom-right corner of MT5 shows the ping to your broker's trade server. Brokers with servers in London, Frankfurt or Amsterdam are closest to our locations.

MetaTrader 5 questions

Which plan do I need for MetaTrader 5?

For one to three terminals with a few EAs, the Basic Windows RDP plan is enough. Choose a bigger plan for many terminals, dozens of charts or long strategy tests, which use more CPU and memory.

Can I run several MT5 terminals on one server?

Yes. Install MT5 a second time into another folder (the installer asks for the path in Settings), or use each broker's own MT5 build. Each terminal logs in to its own account.

Where are your servers?

In Germany and the Netherlands only. That suits brokers whose trade servers are in Europe. If your broker trades from New York or Asia, the ping will be higher.

Is MetaTrader 5 included with the server?

No. You get a clean Windows Server with full Administrator access and install MT5 yourself. It takes a few minutes with the steps on this page.

Does MT5 keep running when I disconnect?

Yes, as long as you close the Remote Desktop window instead of signing out. Signing out closes every program in your session.
