How to install MetaTrader 4

Written for Windows Server 2022 from the official instructions. Your server comes with full Administrator access, so you install the software yourself.

    Connect to your server with Remote Desktop

    Open your server in the client area and download the .rdp file, or open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) on your PC and enter the server's IP address. Sign in as Administrator with the password from your welcome email. On a Mac, use Windows App (Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the App Store.

    Download MT4 from your broker

    On the server, open Microsoft Edge, sign in to your broker's website and download its MetaTrader 4 installer for Windows. Save it to Downloads.

    Install and sign in

    Run the installer and click Next. MT4 opens with a login window; choose your broker's server and enter your account number and password (File > Login to Trade Account later).

    Add your Expert Advisor

    Choose File > Open Data Folder, copy your EA (.ex4 or .mq4) into MQL4\Experts, then right-click Expert Advisors in the Navigator and choose Refresh. Drag the EA onto a chart and turn on AutoTrading in the toolbar.

    Keep MT4 open

    Close the Remote Desktop window with the X instead of signing out, so your EAs keep trading.

After installing

    Close the Remote Desktop window with the X instead of signing out. Your session, and everything open in it, keeps running on the server.
  • Start again after a reboot
    Programs in a Windows session only start when someone signs in. After Windows updates restart the server, connect once over RDP, or set up automatic sign-in with Microsoft's Sysinternals Autologon tool and put a shortcut to the app in the Startup folder (Win+R, shell:startup).
  • More terminals
    Install each broker's MT4 into its own folder. Every copy runs on its own, with its own account and EAs.
