Windows RDP vs VPS: what is the difference?

A VPS is a private virtual server. RDP is the way you use a Windows server's desktop from your own computer. Here is what that means and which one fits what you want to run.

  • Same hardware for both
  • Germany and the Netherlands
  • Pay with crypto

Short answer

Every server we sell is a VPS. The difference is the operating system and how you work with it. A Windows RDP plan gives you a Windows desktop in a window on your PC, Mac or phone. A Linux VPS gives you a command line over SSH, which is lighter and ideal for bots, websites and scripts.

  • VPS
Virtual private server: your own slice of a physical server, with its own CPU cores, memory, storage and IP address.
  • RDP
Remote Desktop Protocol: Microsoft's way to show a Windows desktop on another computer and control it with your mouse and keyboard.
  • Windows RDP
A VPS running Windows Server that you use through Remote Desktop.
  • Linux VPS
A VPS running Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux or Rocky) that you manage over SSH.

Side by side

Both run on the same KVM servers with NVMe storage and DDoS protection, in the same two locations.

Which one do you need?

Pick Windows RDP if you want to

  • run trading terminals like MT4, MT5 or cTrader (Forex VPS)
  • use Windows programs or browsers that need a desktop (antidetect browsers, SEO tools)
  • click around a familiar Windows desktop instead of typing commands

Pick a Linux VPS if you want to

  • host Discord or Telegram bots
  • run scripts, scrapers, websites or databases
  • get the most performance for the price, with nothing running that you didn't install

Windows RDP and VPS questions

Still unsure? Our team answers on live chat and in tickets.

Is a Windows RDP the same as a Windows VPS?

Yes, in practice. A Windows RDP plan is a virtual private server running Windows Server. RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is how you connect to it and see its desktop.

Can I use RDP on a Linux VPS?

Linux servers are normally managed over SSH from a terminal. You can install a desktop and a remote desktop server yourself on a Linux VPS, but if you want a Windows desktop, a Windows RDP plan is the simpler choice.

Which one is cheaper?

Linux VPS plans start lower because Linux has no Windows overhead and needs less memory. The live starting prices for both are shown on this page.

Which one should I pick for trading terminals like MT4 or MT5?

Windows RDP. MetaTrader, cTrader and most trading terminals are Windows programs, and you use them through the remote desktop just like on a PC.

Which one should I pick for bots, websites and scripts?

Usually a Linux VPS. Discord and Telegram bots, web servers, databases and scrapers run well on Linux and use fewer resources.

Can I switch later?

You can reinstall a server with another operating system of the same family from your client area. To move between Windows and Linux, order a server of the other type.
