How to install NinjaTrader

Written for Windows Server 2022 from the official instructions. Your server comes with full Administrator access, so you install the software yourself.

    Connect to your server with Remote Desktop

    Open your server in the client area and download the .rdp file, or open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) on your PC and enter the server's IP address. Sign in as Administrator with the password from your welcome email. On a Mac, use Windows App (Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the App Store.

    Get the installer

    On the server, open Microsoft Edge, go to ninjatrader.com and sign up or sign in. NinjaTrader emails you a link to download NinjaTrader Desktop.

    Install NinjaTrader

    Run the installer, keep the default folder and leave Launch NinjaTrader ticked.

    Connect your account

    Sign in with your NinjaTrader account, then choose Connections in the Control Center and connect to your broker or data feed.

    Enable your strategies

    Import your add-ons with Tools > Import > NinjaScript Add-On, then enable your strategies on the Strategies tab or on a chart.

After installing

  • Leave it running
    Close the Remote Desktop window with the X instead of signing out. Your session, and everything open in it, keeps running on the server.
  • Start again after a reboot
    Programs in a Windows session only start when someone signs in. After Windows updates restart the server, connect once over RDP, or set up automatic sign-in with Microsoft's Sysinternals Autologon tool and put a shortcut to the app in the Startup folder (Win+R, shell:startup).

Does NinjaTrader run on Windows Server?

NinjaTrader's minimum requirements list Windows Server 2012 or later, 64-bit, with .NET Framework 4.8. Windows Server 2022 and 2025 include .NET Framework 4.8.

Which plan do I need for NinjaTrader?

Standard for a normal workspace with a few charts and strategies. Pro for many charts, heavy indicators or market replay.

Is there a graphics card?

No. Our servers have no GPU, so Windows draws the screen in software. Charts work, but keep the number of open charts reasonable.

Where are your servers?

In Germany and the Netherlands only. Futures exchanges like the CME are in the US, so expect a transatlantic ping to them.
