How to install Nextcloud

Written for Ubuntu 24.04 from the official instructions. Run the commands as root and replace YOUR_SERVER_IP with your server's address.

    Connect to your server over SSH

    Use the IP address and root password from your welcome email (the server page has a Copy SSH command button). Windows 10 and 11, macOS and Linux all include an SSH client in the terminal.

    Update the system

    Install the latest security updates before you add anything else.

    Install Docker

    Docker's official convenience script adds Docker's own package repository and installs Docker Engine with the Compose plugin.

    Start the Nextcloud AIO master container

    This is the official All-in-One command, run in the background. It manages the other Nextcloud containers for you.

    Open the AIO interface

    Go to https://YOUR_SERVER_IP:8080 and accept the browser's certificate warning (it is a self-signed certificate for this setup page only). Copy the passphrase it shows and log in.

    Enter your domain and start Nextcloud

    Type your domain, choose the optional apps you want, and click Download and start containers. When it is done, the page shows your admin password and a link to your Nextcloud.

After installing

  • Sign in
    Open https://cloud.example.com and sign in as admin with the password from the AIO page. Install the Nextcloud desktop and mobile apps to sync files.
  • Ports
    443 (Nextcloud), 80 (certificate checks) and 8080 (the AIO interface, which you can close later).
  • Backups
    Server backups are not included. AIO has a built-in backup feature (BorgBackup); point it at another disk or server.

Standard for personal or family use. Choose by storage too: add NVMe space at checkout if your files need it.

Do I need a domain?

Yes. Nextcloud AIO requires a domain pointing at your server so it can get a free HTTPS certificate.

Where are my files stored?

On your server's NVMe disk in Germany or the Netherlands, whichever location you pick.

Can I add more storage later?

Extra NVMe storage is an add-on. Contact support if you want to grow an existing server.
