How to install Uptime Kuma

Written for Ubuntu 24.04 from the official instructions. Run the commands as root and replace YOUR_SERVER_IP with your server's address.

  1. 1

Connect to your server over SSH

Use the IP address and root password from your welcome email (the server page has a Copy SSH command button). Windows 10 and 11, macOS and Linux all include an SSH client in the terminal.

    Shell
    ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP
  2. 2

    Update the system

Install the latest security updates before you add anything else.

    Shell
apt update && apt -y upgrade
  3. 3

    Install Docker

Docker's official convenience script adds Docker's own package repository and installs Docker Engine with the Compose plugin.

    Shell
    curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh
    sh get-docker.sh
    docker --version
  4. 4

    Start Uptime Kuma

The command from Uptime Kuma's README: data in a Docker volume, the web interface on port 3001.

    Shell
    docker run -d --restart=always -p 3001:3001 -v uptime-kuma:/app/data --name uptime-kuma louislam/uptime-kuma:2
  5. 5

    Create the admin account

Open http://YOUR_SERVER_IP:3001 right away and create your account, then add your first monitor.

After installing

  • HTTPS
For a public status page, put Uptime Kuma behind a domain with HTTPS (for example Caddy as a reverse proxy).
  • Email alerts
Outgoing mail ports (25, 465, 587) are blocked by default on our servers. Use Telegram or Discord alerts, or unlock mail with the add-on.
  • Watch from outside
Monitor your other servers from this one. A monitor can't alert you if the server it runs on is down.

Uptime Kuma questions

Which plan do I need for Uptime Kuma?

Basic is plenty for most setups.

Can Uptime Kuma send Telegram or Discord alerts?

Yes. Telegram and Discord notifications use outgoing HTTPS, which works on our servers without any add-on.

Is Uptime Kuma free?

Yes, it is open source under the MIT license.

Can I keep it private?

Bind it to 127.0.0.1 (-p 127.0.0.1:3001:3001) and reach it through an SSH tunnel, or protect it behind a domain with HTTPS and a strong password.
